UFC 274 was turned on its head on Friday, when Charles Oliveira was stripped of the lightweight belt for missing weight ahead of his planned title defence against Justin Gaethje.

Oliveira had been scheduled to defend the title against former interim champion Gaethje in Saturday’s main event, but the Brazilian came in half-a-pound over the 155lbs limit. As a result, the UFC stripped Oliveira of the belt, which he is also ineligible to win back this weekend – though Gaethje can claim the gold.

In the co-main event, Rose Namajunas continues her second stint as strawweight champion as she faces old foe Carla Esparza. Esparza was the first UFC strawweight champion and holds a victory over Namajunas, which the reigning title holder will look to avenge here.

Before those bouts take place, Michael Chandler and fellow lightweight Tony Ferguson go head to head in a meeting between fan favourites who are looking to close ground to the title picture.

Justin Gaethje challenges Charles Oliveira for the UFC’s Lightweight title in what may be one of the division’s greatest fights ever at UFC 274 at Phoenix’s Footprint Center on Saturday, May 7 (5/7/2022).

This is the most highly-anticipated PPV event of the spring, featuring title bouts in the UFC’s most competitive divisions. First up, it’s the lightweight headliner between Oliveira (32-8-0), the #5 pound for pound best fighter in the sport, and Gaethje (23-3-0), a former Interim Champion and the #1 ranked lightweight fighter.

Gaethje has been talking a lot of smack heading into the bout, calling Oliveira a “coward” and a “quitter” in the buildup to the bout.

“If I liked to talk, I’d bring a parrot up here instead of myself,” Oliveira said during the UFC 274 media day. “I let my fight do my talking for me. He can say whatever he wants. It does not bother me.” In the co-main event, Carla Esparza (19-6-0) tries to take the Women’s Strawweight title from champion Rose Namajunas (12-4-0). It’s a rematch of their TUF 20 finale bout in 2014, where Esparza submitted Rose to become UFC’s first Strawweight Champion.
